C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas

 

DESCRIPTION: Discovered by Purple Mountain observitory in China on 1/9/2023, and independantly by ATLAS South Africa on 2/22/2023. The comet is an object of the Ort Clound and reached closest approach to the Sun on 9/27/2024 (distance: 36 million miles), and it's closest approoach to Earth on 10/12/2024 (distance: 44 milion miles). On that day, the visual magnitude was 0, with it's tail esitmated to be 4 degrees in length (Although photographly, it is about 16 degrees as seen in this photo). This comet as others was a naked eye object whcih could be seen from even faily bright cities.

EXPOSURE: Single 10s exposure

NOTES: This was the first night of imaging I had carried out as I was unsure of the visibility and location of the comet. So this was done with a simple camera on a tripod with no guiding. Because the exposuses need to be kept low, I will have the scope out over the next nights and other images will be coming as I get them processed.
