C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas

DESCRIPTION: Discovered by Purple Mountain observitory in China on 1/9/2023, and independantly by ATLAS South Africa on 2/22/2023. The comet is an object of the Ort Clound and reached closest approach to the Sun on 9/27/2024 (distance: 36 million miles), and it's closest approoach to Earth on 10/12/2024 (distance: 44 milion miles). On that day, the visual magnitude was 0, with it's tail esitmated to be 4 degrees in length (Although photographly, it is about 16 degrees as seen in this photo). This comet as others was a naked eye object whcih could be seen from even faily bright cities.

LOCATION: Woodstock, Illinios
DATE: 10/16/8:30PM
SCOPE: Radian Raptor 61mm f/4.5
CAMERA: ZWO ASI294MC Pro CMOS
EXPOSURE: 10x60 color, 10 minute total exposure.

NOTES: This was the second night of imaging this comet. This time it was imaged through a wide field scope on a CEM60 mount with tracking. The exposures are short but the outcome was pretty good, although it could have used more sub exposures. This was only 10 exposures at 60 seconds. In this image you can see a odd phenomenon, their is a shadow of light leading the comet nucleus. This is due to the fact at the time of this iamging, the comet was passing throught the orbital plane of the earth, it would not be seen otherwise.
